6 Weeks Old!
Hana turned 6 weeks old yesterday! She has done so much and experienced so many new things in her first few weeks out in the world. As of this week, she is beginning to smile at us. We also have a tongue game that we play, where mom sticks her tongue out and then Hana does it. And she can now hold a rattle and shake it (the shaking is probably accidental, but it sure is cute!) She's making lots of vowel sounds, too. If only she could learn to eat a meal instead of snacking all day...we're working on it! We also finally found a bottle that doesn't lead to uncontrollable screaming, so she gets one from dad in the evening to give mom a break from nursing. In fact, she just had her bottle and then drifted off to sleep, and dad is putting her down right now...

Anniversary? What Anniversary?
On July 20th, my friend Brigid posted on my facebook wall "Happy 2nd Anniversary!" I couldn't for the life of me figure out what she was talking about. It wasn't Hana's 2 week birthday, or her 2 month birthday. After much pondering, I realized she meant our 2-year WEDDING anniversary (July 21st). Pete and I had completely forgotten about it. So we actually went out to dinner at an Italian restaurant and Hana slept almost the whole time, only fussing a little during dessert. Fortunately, she charmed all the staff, so no one minded. The pic above was taken right after dinner.

And...
We're back to the colic. At least it's not every night! Tonight, the swing with the ocean sound was the cure. Don't know how we're going to get her out of there and into the bed without waking her. Every day brings new challenges!
Colic Came, and Then It Went (For Good? I Doubt It)
No colic last night. Not even a whimper. Perhaps her outing with the Peeler Dudes at Lanesplitters was enough stimulation, even though she slept through the whole thing. And then there was the soothing noise of the vacuum cleaner. (That always does it for me too...can't think of anything I'd rather fall asleep to than the blaring abrasive vacuum cleaner.)

The Colic Has Arrived
7 hours of off and on crying last night. Then...blessed sleep. Ahhhhh. Hoping for a night off tonight.

Week 4

In other news, Hana is developing a love for bath time (see pics above) and kitty has developed a love for Hana's papasan chair. She's second fiddle now, so we are allowing her some leeway. Grandma Sharon has been here for almost two weeks and has been an enormous help. She made us lots of dinners and a bunch of freezer meals, changed a lot of diapers, and quieted a lot of fussing.

Big Day in SF and Other Recent Adventures
Yesterday Hana went to SF to visit the folks at Dara's office. She met lots of new people, all of whom said she was adorable. She also went to her first HPPC meeting! (She voted "yes" on the Strategies and Interventions chapter and is in complete support of the new HIV Prevention Plan being approved.) Today she accompanied mom to a breastfeeding support group and got a "thumbs up" on her latching abilities, despite the fact that mom is still in a fair amount of pain, which will hopefully go away soon.
This weekend Hana will meet her cousins Mia and Kasey and her aunt and uncle Leah and Kevin.

First 4th of July Weekend
While Cousin Kasey was celebrating his 1-year-old birthday, Hana was kickin' it at the Yumps. She lasted a good 2 hours and was a good sport. On Sunday, she had steak tacos at Marc and Jessica's - yum! She had a blast hanging out with buddy Logan (see above). Logan is 11 weeks old, about 2 months older than Hana.
Projectile Pooping
Um, no one warned us about this. I knew it could happen when they are newborns and under the bilirubin lights, but didn't know this could happen later on. And just when we ran out of wipes, too.

Where Does the Day Go?
Yesterday we managed to fit in about 5 minutes of tummy time. Hana lifted her head up by herself and turned it to the other side (I was shaking a rattle behind her head). We also went to a 4th of July BBQ. That was pretty much the day. Oh, and learning how to cope with our first serious inconsolable crying fit. It lasted about an hour I think, but felt like eternity. I'm not sure what finally helped her sleep, but suddenly, she was out like a light and slept for about 3 hours.
Hana had fun on Friday evening playing with her Portland friends Nola and Chloe. The prospect of having two kids right now seems...well, insane. Who would do such a thing? :)
Hana is sleeping at the moment and for 5 minutes I have a break! Then we are off to another BBQ.

Hana the Circus Freak
Hana is growing at a very rapid rate. Today she weighs 8 lbs 7 oz according to our scale. We figure she can join the circus early on as the "Giant Baby" and earn some money for college.
Her new favorite thing is the vibrating papasan chair. Why they don't make these things for adults I have no idea. Or maybe they do??
She has also developed quite the grunt, which comes in handy while pooping or waking up out of a deep sleep. This complements the snort, which is used primarily when trying desperately to get milk. Hiccups and sneezes, though involuntary, round out her repertoire of sounds made to date.

15 Days Old
15 days old, and we are starting to get the hang of this. Sort of. Hana has just started to cry without apparent reason, so we are learning how to manage that. Pete is doing better with it than me. He seems to have the touch for calming her. All I can offer is milk! Which sometimes works, but not always.
Hana had her second "fun" outing today - shopping on College Ave. and a trip to Trader Joe's. Shelley, Brian, and Cole brought us a yummy quiche tonight - salmon, artichokes, and goat cheese, with a little dill. Tomorrow Christine, Lance, Nola, and Chloe from Portland are coming to visit!
